I bought my Nashbar AL-1 from amazon last year and have been very happy with the bike so far. I use it as my daily commuter, riding it about 17-19 miles every day from Brooklyn to midtown Manhattan and back. The aluminum frame definitely means that you know when you are going over a bumpy patch of asphalt, and potholes and curbs are a bit more jarring than on a steel framed bike, but in general I have found it to be a very comfortable and nimble ride and the geometry seems to fit my frame particularly well. I brought it as a replacement for a stolen Cannondale Capo, and have to say that although it cost about half as much as the Capo, I don't feel like I have taken much of a step down in ride or comfort (although you can tell that some of the components are not particularly top of the line). Overall I think you can't really go wrong at this price.
Note: the bike comes partially assembled in the box, and most of the trickiest work, (brakes, shifters etc) are already properly connected, so it's not too difficult to put together even if you are a novice at this sort of thing. However if you have never put a bike together before it would be a good idea to get it looked over and possibly tuned at a bike shop after you assemble it and before putting it through its paces.

I am a triathlon beginner so I was looking for a bike that I could use in that sport and that was not so much expensive. The Nashbar AL-01 with the price of less $500 was the best cost-benefit that I found. And I searched at lot... So I bought it and I do not regret at all. That is a great bike, very lightweight and fast. I am not tall (1.65m = 5.4 feet = 65 inch), so I needed a bike with 48-frame, something not easy to find. So, the 48-frame Nashbar AL-01 fits perfectly for me.
After using the bike for a almost a month now, I only bought two things to substitute: a new clipless pedal and a new seat. The pedal I bought because I use cycling shoes so, I needed clipless pedal (unfortunately, the bike does not came with one). The seat that comes with the bike is fine, you can use it with will be cycling not long distances. But since I am training with distance with more than 20 miles, I found that I needed to buy a better seat.
In sum, the bike is great and you will not regret.

By Edward
The bike was packaged well and the box did not get damaged at all, luckily. My first time assembling a bike, so I had to do some reading and youtube wathcing here and there, but no biggie. Just make sure you have the proper wrenches/bike tool and some chain oil and good lube. The bike doesn't seem lubed at all. So you may need to take apart the head post for example, and maybe even the bottom bearing to properly lube. Anyways, I put it all together and the bike is pretty good for the value. Light enough for a beginner and I like how it's a carbon fork. The Sora components are also pretty good for an entry-level, again you may need to adjust a bit to get optimum shifting performance. I need to ride it more to give a fair review of the actual performance/ride. The saddle/seat will probably get replaced later.
The BIG COMPLAINT is with the specs of the bike that were on the website. I was suppose to get Alex R2002 rims with Hutchinson Fusion 3 700x23 tires. The website stated exactly that. BUT instead I got Alex R500 rims with Vittoria Zaffiro 700x23 tires. If you check the specs now, they already fixed the website to display the correct specs. I did not want the R500 rims and Vittoria tires, because I heard they both suck. Nashbar just said sorry and I was stuck with what I got. To be fair, I could've returned, BUT didn't want to deal with the hassle. I SHOULD have gotten the correct parts in the first place.
So in conclusion, the bike is pretty darn good for someone gettng into riding, but I will no longer be doing business with Nashbar, since they didn't bother to fix my problem regarding incorrect parts on this product. For the most part, I recommend the product, BUT NOT the seller (Nashbar).
