This is my first bike ever. I cannot give an expert review but I know quality when I see one. My boyfriend bought the Pure Fix (a more popular brand of fixie bike) so I was able to compare that with the Retrospec. There are things I like and not like about the Retrospec, and I understand that this bike is designed to be as simple as it could be (which I love because I'm a minimalist).
Pros (for me):
-It looks beautiful and simple. (especially in Millennium)
-In comparison to PureFix, it sits more upright, and it is exactly what I am looking for because I don't want to lean over too much. This isn't a cruise bike, but it's more comfortable for me compared to PureFix. However, if you are looking for a more racey feel, Pure Fix would be a good choice and that was what my boyfriend preferred.
-It is light, as light as PureFix.
-front and rear brakes. It was a bless because the Purefix only has rear brake and it sucks because it wouldn't even completely stop. The Retrospec completely stops the bike. Once I rode so fast and brake all of a sudden because there was a car, the brake worked so good that the rear wheel lifted up (no skidding).
Cons:
-no holes for water bottle, I know that it was designed that way intentionally...but I do get thirsty while I'm biking long distance. Not a problem, I bought a Minora adapter and had my boyfriend installed it for me. Beware, if you are looking to do the same...this Minora adapter is almost impossible to install. It took 5 persons, 1 hour and still failed. Fortunately, my boyfriend is a product designer and he somehow figured it out EXCEPT he accidentally made two drill marks on my bike frame! >:( it's ok, I'll put a sticker on it. I'm a perfectionist and it that would really bother me.
-wheel size. If I didn't have the pure fix bike to compare it to, I wouldn't know the difference (since I'm new to road bikes). The wheels on Retrospec is SO SMALL that when I ride over small crack my head vibrates. No problem, I just lift up my butts. But sometimes I want to NOT lift up my butts. But really though, I was so careful in making sure the path is smooth. I would compare this experience to wearing vibram shoes, you have to look at where you run and make sure you don't step on rocks or else it would HURT. I don't really mind this because it made me more aware of the path I'm biking on. When I bike with PureFix, it was another story because the wheels are bigger, there was more cushion and I don't have to worry so much about the bumps on the road. So biking on uneven paths with lots of bumps really kills the joy out of biking my Retrospec, but it's a road bike so I can understand (but bumps and cracks on the road are unpredictable! I came face to face with a 6" high crack walk way...literally stopped & lifted my bike over the crack) I am thinking of replacing the wheels with the PureFix wheels...whenever I have the money to throw around.
-wish the pedal length would be longer. It would be more comfortable that way. In an extreme example, it's like riding a mini circus bike made for monkey, it's a lot of pedaling and going nowhere (even for the monkeys). I just enjoy longer "stride". But I don't mind, and it doesn't bother me that much. Both purefix and retrospec have this "Short Pedal Length Syndrome".
CONCLUSION: Overall I love this bike with its simplistic design and great quality, there are minor issues but I'm a very picky person so it probably wouldn't bother most people. Riding uphill on bike trail proves to be challenging but great leg workout! Great bike!
